Recently published data highlights that colon cancer is becoming more common among younger patients (Siegel 2017), and new clinical guidelines have been released that recommend tattooing all lesions that need to be followed-up at future colonoscopy or surgery (Ferlitsch 2017).
Today, we’re proud to introduce our latest advance to combat these trends and implement these new guidelines — Spot® Ex Endoscopic Tattoo, available in the United States. The new Spot Ex Endoscopic Tattoo provides a permanent tattoo, enabling a lifetime of patient follow-up. Spot Ex is much darker than the current Spot product, making the tattoo easier-to-find and helping endoscopists and surgeons manage time and productivity pressures.
“We’re excited to aid in the fight against colon cancer and advance the science of endoscopic tattooing with a permanent and cost-effective solution for gastroenterologists and surgeons,” said GI Supply CEO, Luke Johnson. “Our mission at GI Supply is to help more GI physicians do more advanced endoscopic procedures safely and efficiently, and Spot Ex is a great next step in meeting those needs.”
Medical practitioners have already witnessed the clinical benefits and time saved due to endoscopic tattooing:
“As a therapeutic endoscopist at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, I am often referred complex polyp removal cases. In those scenarios it is very beneficial to have the polyp tattooed for easy identification,” said Dr. Sri Komanduri, Gastroenterologist. “In addition, post-resection I typically follow up with the patient within six months to ensure there is no adenoma recurrence, and a tattoo helps with that surveillance. The new Spot Ex tattoo will help me monitor that patient as long as needed.”
“In my practice at San Antonio Gastroenterology Associates we have seen a steady increase in young patients being diagnosed with colon cancer. Fortunately, earlier diagnosis and new endoscopic therapies we offer are working,” said Dr. Antonio Serna, Gastroenterologist. “But these patients need to come back for many years of surveillance. Spot Ex gives me a way to feel confident in my assessment of cancer remission or recurrence.”
For nearly 30 years, GI Supply has worked to solve the clinical challenges of gastroenterology, with products used around the world daily by gastroenterologists and colorectal surgeons in more than 40 countries. We’re proud and privileged to continue our mission with the introduction of Spot Ex and look forward to continuing to meet these challenges.
